Not to be confused with the previous Jeyne Westerling, who lived about 300 years before this one and married King Maegor I.

Queen Jeyne Westerling is the eldest daughter of Lord Gawen Westerling and Sybell Spicer. She was briefly married to King Robb Stark, around a year before he was killed. In the TV series her character is replaced by a character called Talisa of Volantis played by Oona Chaplin.

Appearance

Jeyne is a shy, pretty girl, though according to Jaime Lannister not a beauty to lose a kingdom for. [1] [2] She is slender of posture. Jeyne has "chestnut curls and heart-shaped face" and brown eyes.[1]

History

House Westerling is an old house that descends from the First Men.[1] Although noble and old the family is not rich, their gold mines having failed. Presumably to better his finances Gawen Westerling wed Sybell Spicer, the daughter of an ennobled family that descended from merchants. Because of the low standing of Jeyne's mother, she was rejected as a match for one of Kevan Lannister's sons.[3]

Recent Events

A Storm of Swords

During King Robb Stark's expedition in the Westerlands his army stormed the ancestral keep of the Westerlings. Robb was wounded by an arrow and was nursed by Jeyne. While still at the Crag a message came that Robb's brothers had been killed by his former friend Prince Theon Greyjoy. Jeyne comforted Robb in his grief and they slept together. To protect her honour he married her the next day.[1] The marriage led directly to the break-up of her husband’s alliance with House Frey, as Robb had sworn to wed a Frey girl. The Freys took their forces back to the Twins, although a part of their strength remained with Lord Roose Bolton.[1]

The couple were devoted to each other. They had sex very often. Jeyne tried very hard to be a good wife for Robb, although she was worried about the pressure he was under as King of the North. On Catelyn's advice she tried to be patient and understanding.[4] Robb for his part was able to smile and be temporarily without worries when he was in her company.[5]

After negotiations, House Frey offered to ally themselves once again to the Starks in return for the marriage of Edmure Tully to Roslin Frey and a personal apology from Robb.[5] Jeyne remained at Riverrun to avoid extra tension between Lord Frey and her husband.[6]

At the wedding, House Frey betrayed and killed Robb. After the wedding, Jeyne was pardoned by the Iron Throne.[7]

A Feast for Crows

Jeyne went into mourning, to the chagrin of her mother, who had been in secret negotiations with Lord Tywin Lannister. Unknown to Jeyne, her mother had given her potions against pregnancy under the pretense of a fertility potion. Riverrun was besieged shortly after but the siege was settled peacefully by Ser Jaime Lannister. He had Jeyne returned to her father back at the Crag. To avoid tales that her dead husband had given her a child (and thus an heir), Jeyne was to remain unmarried for two years and was given a strong escort of soldiers with secret instructions to kill her if there would be any attempt to kidnap her.[2]

Family

Jeyne has two brothers and a sister. Her elder brother Raynald was present at the Red Wedding. He freed Grey Wind, and tried to escape the Freys by jumping in the river. He is presumed dead.[8] Her younger brother Rollam served as Robb's squire.[1] Her younger sister is Eleyna. Eleyna and Jeyne are both to marry lords or heirs, as negotiated between their mother and Tywin Lannister.[2]

Speculations

It has been noted by fans that the descriptions of Jeyne as given by Jaime en Catelyn do not match. In A Storm of Swords Catelyn Tully describes her as a undeniable pretty young woman, slender but with good hips (a factor which may suggest a fertile woman). Jaime Lannister in A Feast For Crows describes her as a pretty girl, but not a girl to lose a kingdom for. He also notes that she has narrow hips. [1] [2] This difference has been the source for a number of speculations about Jeyne's fate.[9] [10][11] [12]
