High King of the Iron Islands, also known as the King of the Isles and Iron King, is the ancient title of the rulers of the Iron Islands and the Ironborn.

About

Initially the Ironking was elected at a Kingsmoot by the captains of the Ironfleet. However this tradition ended thousands of years ago and the Ironborn were ruled over by House Hoare ever since.

During the reign of King Qhored Hoare, the Ironborn held the western shore of Westeros. Over the centuries King Qhored's descendants lost the Arbor, Oldtown, Bear Island, and much of the western shore.

King Harwyn Hoare extended the ironborn rule over the Riverlands from the Neck to the Blackwater Rush and his grandson King Harren Hoare, known as Harren the Black, ruled all the lands between the mountains from the Neck to the Blackwater Rush. Harren the Black was the last King of the Iron Islands, dying during the War of Conquest in Harrenhal when Aegon the Conquerer unleashed his dragons upon the castle.

Centuries later Balon Greyjoy declared himself King of the Iron Islands, in what was later called the Greyjoy Rebellion and was put down by Robert I and he subjected to the Seven Kingdoms.

Most recently, during the War of the Five Kings, Balon recrowned himself - but was slain less then a year later. His brother Aeron Greyjoy called a Kingsmoot calling for the selection of a new King. This led to the crowning of Euron Greyjoy.
