The lion of Westeros is similar to a real life lion.

History

The lions inhabited the western hills of the continent. In antiquity, the lions made dens in the Casterly Rock itself.[1] Lions were more frequently seen during the reign of Lord Tytos Lannister, as the first knight of House Clegane saved Lord Tytos from a lioness and lost a leg and three dogs in the effort.[2] Cersei Lannister recalls several caged lions kept in the bowels of Casterly Rock during her childhood, a legacy of her grandfather's time.[3]

By 300 AC, Leaf tells Brandon Stark the great lions of the western hills have been slain.[4] Semi-canon sources state a few lions survive in the outlying hills. For the most part, they have been hunted down.[5]
