Lord Confessor was a position at the royal court of the Seven Kingdoms under the rule of House Targaryen. The Lord Confessor served as the royal torturer, overseeing lesser confessors and was, in turn, overseen by the King's Justice, the royal headsman. The chambers of the Lord Confessor, the King's Justice, and the Chief Gaoler are located in the Red Keep in the dungeon tower at the end of Traitor's Walk.[1]

History

Following the death of King Maegor I Targaryen, Prince Jaehaerys Targaryen ordered the arrests of the Lord Confessor, the King's Justice, the Chief Gaoler, the Commander of the City Watch, and the four remaining Kingsguard who had remained loyal to the late king.[2].

Larys Strong, Lord of Harrenhal, served as Lord Confessor as well as master of whisperers to Kings Viserys I and Aegon II Targaryen after serving as a confessor.[3]

After becoming Hand of the King to young Aegon III Targaryen, Unwin Peake, Lord of Starpike, named his supporter, George Graceford, Lord of Holyhall, as Lord Confessor.[4] When Torrhen Manderly, Lord of White Harbor, became Hand to Aegon III, he named the young Maester Rowley as Lord Confessor at Grand Maester Munkun's behest.[5]

There has not been a Lord Confessor since the reign of King Daeron II Targaryen.[1]
