The Lord of Bones, also mocked as "Rattleshirt" by the brothers of the Night's Watch, is a wildling leader of renown. He is called Rattleshirt due to his armor, which is made up of loosely-tied bones that clatter as he moves. He wears a broken giant's skull as his helm.[1]

Rattleshirt brings Jon Snow to Mance Rayder. He is dismissed by Mance, but not before he casts suspicion on Jon's true motives. During the wildling assault on the Wall, Rattleshirt was spotted near Long Barrow.[4] Rattleshirt was captured by the Night's Watch and was trotted out at the meeting between Jon Snow and Lord Janos Slynt as a witness of the death of Qhorin Halfhand at the hands of Jon.[5]

A Dance with Dragons

When Mance Rayder is executed by Stannis and the Watch, the man who they killed was actually Rattleshirt, who was glamoured by Melisandre to appear as Mance. Meanwhile the real Mance, via an enchanted ruby worn around his wrist, appears as Rattleshirt.[6][7]
