History

Lord Jon Rosby was named Warden of the Sands by King Aegon I Targaryen during the First Dornish War, but Jon was killed in the Defenestration of Sunspear.[3] When word of Jon's death reached the Hellholt, Lord Harlen Tyrell set off towards Sunspear to punish Lord Rosby's murderers. However, somewhere east of the Hellholt amidst the red sands, Tyrell and his entire army disappeared. No man of them was ever seen again.[4]

During the reign of King Maegor I Targaryen, Lord Rosby was one of the few lords to remain loyal to Maegor near the end of his reign.[5] He along Lord Jordan Towers were the last to see the king alive before Maegor's death on the Iron Throne.[5] After the king was found dead, Lord Rosby committed suicide by drinking a cup of hemlock. His young son received forgiveness from King Jaehaerys I Targaryen at Dragonstone.[6]

A Lord Rosby died from the Shivers in the winter of 59 AC.[7]

During the reign of King Viserys I Targaryen, Lord Rosby swore to defend the succession rights of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen. In 129 AC, during the Dance of the Dragons in which Rhaenyra's brother Aegon II Targaryen challenged her rule by claiming Viserys's throne for himself, Lord Rosby was arrested by Aegon II's supporters. When given the choice between swearing his allegiance to Aegon II or dying, Lord Rosby pledged his support to Aegon II.[8] When Ser Criston Cole marched from King's Landing to attack Duskendale and ultimately Rook's Rest, he passed by Rosby and Stokeworth to command both lords to prove their loyalty by joining his attack.[8] When King's Landing fell to Queen Rhaenyra during 130 AC, Lord Rosby attempted to switch his allegiance again. Queen Rhaenyra refused him, however, and ordered his tongue removed, after which he was executed. Following Lord Rosby's death, Prince Daemon Targaryen suggested marrying Rosby's young daughter to Hugh Hammer, to grant Hammer the Rosby lands. Lord Corlys Velaryon, the Hand of the Queen, argued instead in favor of Rosby's younger son. According to Lord Corlys, disinheriting the younger son in favor of the older daughter would call into question the rights of multiple other lords, who had elder sisters whose claims might suddenly be seen as superior. Unwilling to lose the support of such lords, according to Grand Maester Munkun, Rhaenyra eventually named Rosby's son as the new Lord of Rosby.[9]

When Rhaenyra later fled the capital following the riots, she sought refuge at Rosby but the elder sister of the new Lord of Rosby, whose claim had been put aside, barred her the gates of the castle at her approach.[10]

Lord Gyles Rosby was among those offered as possible matches by Doran Martell, Prince of Dorne, to his daughter, Princess Arianne Martell.[11]
