He was a small grey man with grey eyes and hair. He had a robe of grey wool with voluminous sleeves. In the sleeves were sewn pockets, from which Maester Luwin was always drawing things.[2] His maester's collar was a simple choker.[3] He was an untidy man. He was one of the few maesters who bothered to study for the Valyrian steel link.[4]
Recent Events
A Game of Thrones
Maester Luwin receives and brings Catelyn Stark a letter from her sister Lysa Arryn saying that Queen Cersei murdered her husband Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King.[5]. After Catelyn reads the letter, Luwin joins Catelyn in urging Lord Eddard to accept Lord Arryn's vacant post. The Starks decided that they must continue on as if nothing happened, with Ned continuing south with the king. After Bran is crippled, Luwin is part of the group Catelyn confers with about what to do next before she leaves for King's Landing. After Robb's departure south after Lord Eddard had been taken prisoner, Maester Luwin is named castellan of Winterfell. He relinquished the title upon Ser Rodrik Cassel's return from the south.
A Clash of Kings
With Robb Stark's departure, the day-to-day rule of the North falls to Ser Rodrik Cassel and Maester Luwin, acting with Bran's voice. With Ser Rodrik's departure to deal with Ramsay Snow, the fight over the Hornwood inheritance, and Dagmer Cleftjaw threatening Torrhen's Square, the governance fell completely on his shoulders. After Theon Greyjoy captured Winterfell, he continued to serve in the castle. Maester Luwin was stabbed and run down during the Sack of Winterfell by Bolton men. As he lay dying by the godswood, Luwin instructed Osha to split Bran and Rickon Stark up. He was given the gift of mercy by Osha.
