History
Lyman served as master of coin and lord treasurer almost uninterrupted since the reign of King Jaehaerys I Targaryen until the end of King Viserys I Targaryen's reign.[3][2]
Lyman was a man of eighty when King Viserys I passed away prior to the Dance of the Dragons. When the small council gathered in the chambers of Queen Alicent Hightower, Lyman was the only one to espouse the claim of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, Viserys's daughter and preferred heir, over the claim of Prince Aegon Targaryen, Alicent's eldest son.[2]
According to Grand Maester Orwyle, who was present in the chamber, Ser Otto Hightower, the Hand of the King, had Lyman arrested and sent to the black cells, where he eventually died of a chill. In contrast, Septon Eustace claimed that Ser Criston Cole, the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, slit Lyman's throat with his dagger. Court fool Mushroom alleges that Criston instead tossed Lyman from the window onto the spikes of the Maegor's Holdfast's moat. Eustace and Mushroom were not present, however. Lyman was succeeded as master of coin by Ser Tyland Lannister.[2]
Lyman's death was kept secret, with most believing he was languishing in a black cell.[2] Lyman's heir, Ser Alan Beesbury, loudly demanded the release of his grandsire.[5]
Quotes
I am an old man, but not so old that I will sit here meekly whilst the likes of you plot to steal her crown.[2]
