Maiden's Day is a holy day in the calendar of the Faith of the Seven. On that day maidens of noble houses are required to go to the sept to light tall white candles at the Maiden's feet and hang parchment garlands about her neck. Mothers, whores and widows are barred from the sept along with men. Those maidens who enter the sept sing songs of innocence.[1]

The time of Maiden's Day seems movable[2], sometimes at some point in the first five months of the calendar year in Westeros,[N 1] sometimes near the end of a year.[N 2]

History

In 133 AC, a ball was held in King's Landing to find a second wife for King Aegon III Targaryen after the death of his first wife, Queen Jaehaera. Mushroom dubbed the ball as the "Maiden's Day Cattle Show".[3]

Tommen mentions that Margaery Tyrell will be at the Great Sept for Maiden's Day.[1]

Notes

  1. Maiden's Day is described to have occurred soon after the Butcher's Ball (The Princess and the Queen), a battle known to occur in 130 AC (The World of Ice & Fire, The Targaryen Kings: Aegon II). Prince Daemon Targaryen died months after the Butcher's Ball, on the twenty-second day of the fifth moon of 130 AC. Hence, Maiden's day falls somewhere within the first five months of the year.
  2. Maiden's Day Cattle Show happened at some point in the last few days of 133 AC.
