Manse near the Iron Gate
A manse near the Iron Gate,[1] known semi-canonically as Shae's Manse,[2] is a residence in King's Landing.
Layout
The manse is located northwest of the Iron Gate in northeastern King's Landing, near Blackwater Bay and the Rosby road.[3][2] The sprawling building is made of stone-and-timber and has its own garden, stable, and well.[4] It has spiked stone walls,[5] and an ornate bronze eye allows guards to lock out through the gates.[6] The garden has fruit trees an a stone bathing pond.[5]
The longhall of the manse has diamond-shaped panes.[5] A bedchamber upstairs has a featherbed.[6]

A Clash of Kings
Tyrion Lannister settles his mistress, Shae, in the manse after he arrives in King's Landing to serve as Hand of the King. Tyrion provides her with servants and a white bird from the Summer Isles.[4] Varys supplies a eunuch strangler, a pair of Ibbenese, and other ugly sellswords to protect Shae on Tyrion's behalf.[6][5]
Tyrion visits Shae by first traveling to Chataya's brothel, where he ostensibly enjoys the services of Alayaya. However, Tyrion actually travels from the brothel through a secret passage beneath the Hill of Rhaenys to a nearby stable, where he then rides a horse to Shae's manse.[3]
When the riot of King's Landing break out, Tyrion sends Shagga to watch over Shae.[1] Symon Silver Tongue sings to Shae at the manse.[5] Varys arranges for Shae to leave the manse and instead serve in the Red Keep as a maidservant of Lollys Stokeworth. Tyrion promises to move her back into a manse after Stannis Baratheon is defeated.[5]
