Mirri Maz Duur was a wise woman of the Lhazareen.[2] In the TV series she is played by Mia Soteriou.[4]

Appearance

She was a heavyset, flat-nosed woman with black hair. She was about 40-years-old when Daenerys first met her. [2]

History

Mirri was a godswife in the temple to the Great Shepherd, a Lhazar deity. Her mother had been a godswife before her and taught her all the spells and songs. As a young girl she had traveled to Asshai to learn the arts of the shadowbinders. She also studied the birthing songs of the moonsingers of the Jogos Nhai, the herb lore of the Dothraki and the medicines of Maester Marwyn.[2]

Recent Events

A Game of Thrones

Mirri was made a slave when Khal Drogo's khalasar fought and defeated Khal Ogo outside her hometown in Lhazar. The Dothraki then attacked and conquered Mirri's hometown, enslaving the local people. When Daenerys Targaryen rode through the burned town, she saw Mirri being raped by one of Drogo's warriors and put an end to it.

While Daenerys gave Mirri and the other rape victims protection from further attacks, Daenerys' husband Drogo was suffering from his battle wounds. Though Drogo was unconcerned, Daenerys convinced him to let Mirri Maz Duur make him a poultice.[2] The poultice itched, and Drogo tore it off, causing the wound to fester. Drogo's condition deteriorated until he fell from his horse, a symbol to his warriors that he could no longer lead them. As he lingered near death, Daenerys convinced Mirri Maz Duur to use her blood magic to preserve his life.[5] Mirri betrayed her in revenge for the attack on her village, and the ritual only returned Drogo to a catatonic vegetable state, while causing his son Rhaego to die in Daenerys' womb.[6]

Daenerys in revenge had Mirri Maz Duur burned to death upon Drogo's funeral pyre, this act aided in a spell which caused the dragon eggs of Daenerys to hatch.[7]

Further Involvement

When Daenerys entered the House of the Undying in Qarth she was told she would be betrayed "once for blood, once for gold and once for love". Dany believes Mirri was the first betrayal for blood.
