The New Castle is the seat of House Manderly within the city of White Harbor in the North. The commander of its garrison is Ser Marlon Manderly, while its maester is Theomore.[1]

History

The Manderlys were awarded the Wolf's Den by House Stark and tasked with defending the White Knife a thousand years before the War of Conquest. As the city of White Harbor developed under the Manderlys' leadership, they built the New Castle. The Wolf's Den is now used as a prison.[2]

Layout

The proud and pale New Castle is built atop a hill rising above the city's thick white walls. The merman sigil of House Manderly flies from its towers. The broad, stepped Castle Stair is a white stone street that leads from the Wolf's Den up the hill to the New Castle. There is a clear view of both of the city's harbors from the hilltop.[2]

The Merman's Court is the great hall of the New Castle where the Manderlys hold court. Chambers within the castle are handsomely furnished.[1][3] The household guard wear cloaks of blue-green wool and carry silver tridents instead of spears. The Manderlys decorate their castle with faded banners, broken shields, rusted swords, and wooden figures from the prows of ships.[1] There is a secret passage beneath the Castle Stair that leads from the New Castle to the Wolf's Den.[3]

Recent Events

A Dance with Dragons

Lord Davos Seaworth visits the New Castle to gain the support of House Manderly for King Stannis Baratheon. Lord Wyman Manderly publicly rejects Davos in the Merman's Court, however, and has Davos imprisoned.[1] Later, Robett Glover visits Davos at the Wolf's Den and leads him through a secret passage to Lord Wyman in the New Castle. While the rest of the court feasts the return of Wyman's heir, Wylis Manderly, in the Merman's Court, Lord Wyman reveals to Davos in his chambers that he is plotting against the Boltons and the Freys. He tasks Davos with finding Rickon Stark.[3]
