Old Ghis
Ghis was the capital city of the ancient Ghiscari Empire. It is commonly called Old Ghis now. It was founded by Grazdan the Great.[1] Its emblem was a harpy; a woman's torso, wings of a bat instead of arms, legs of an eagle and a scorpion's tail. In its claws rested a thunderbolt.[2] The ruins of Old Ghis lie in the Ghiscar region on the eastern continent, almost directly east across the Gulf of Grief from Valyria.[3]
History
According to semi-canon sources, during the Age of Heroes, Ghis was the major power in the east.[4] Ghis was destroyed five thousand years ago by Valyria when Valyria was still young. The city was burned to ash with the use of dragons and its fields sewn with salt to prevent any return of its surviving inhabitants.[5]
The People
The Ghiscari spread over a large area and even though Ghis itself was destroyed, several of their satellite cities, such as the Slaver Cities, Astapor and Meereen continue to exist and carry on their traditions. Ghiscari have dense, wiry hair and amber skin. Some men of the Slaver Cities fashionably tease their hair into horns, wings and spikes.[6]
Rituals and Beliefs
