The Old Mint is located within the city walls of White Harbor on the Fishfoot Yard. It has huge oak and iron doors, which up until quite recently, to the best of Davos’s knowledge, had always been closed.[1]

There are people living in the Old Mint. Davos glimpses hundreds of women and children and old men inside, huddled on the floor on piles of furs. Some have little cookfires going.

The people living in the Old Mint have no other place to go. Most are smallfolk from up the White Knife, some are Hornwood’s people too. With the Bastard of Bolton running loose they have sought sanctuary - they all want to be inside the city's walls, no doubt due to the Bastard of Bolton's dread reputation. What Lord Wyman Manderly means to do with them no one knows. Most of them turned up with no more than the rags on their backs.

They eat by begging and stealing. Lots of young girls have become prostitutes, the way girls always do when that’s all they have to sell. A boy that stands five feet tall can find a place in Lord Wyman Manderly’s barracks, as long as he can hold a spear.[1]

While in Fishfoot Yard Davos notices that the Old Mint is open. He asks the apple seller why. When he hears that the people staying in the Old Mint have come for sanctuary he despairs, thinking:

They came here for refuge, to a city untouched by the fighting, and here I turn up to drag them back into the war. [1]
