Pirates commit acts of robbery or criminal violence at sea, on a shore or in other major bodies of water, such as the river pirates on River Rhoyne.

Pirates in a Song of Ice and Fire

  • Pirates still make their dens upon the Stepstones and venture forth to prey on honest men.
  • Stannis Baratheon hired Salladhor Saan, a Lysene pirate, known as Prince of the Narrow Sea to provide him with more ships to aid in his battle for the Iron Throne.[1]
  • When Quentyn Martell was sailing incognito on the Meadowlark pirates came aboard the when the boat was anchored off the coast of the Disputed Lands; the crew beat them off at the cost of twelve lives.[2]
  • When Aurane Waters flees with the royal fleet after the arrest of Queen Cersei; Grand Maester Pycelle believes that he is sailing to the Stepstones, to set himself up as a pirate.[3]
  • There are pirates on Dagger Lake, it is full of islands where pirates lurk in hidden caves and secret strongholds. Urho the Unwashed is the worst of them; his stench is enough to kill a man. The Lady Korra on Hag’s Teeth is called Korra the Cruel. Her ship is supposedly crewed by beautiful young maids who geld every man they capture.[4]
  • Pirates are thickest on the stretch of river between Ar Noy and the Sorrows, the Qohorik rule the river, and below the Sorrows the galleys of Volantis hold sway, but neither city claims the waters in between, so the pirates have made it their own.
  • Pirates will not sail into the Sorrows.[4]
