Ser Qarl Correy was a household knight in service to House Velaryon at High Tide. Of relatively low birth, Qarl was rumored to have been a lover of Ser Laenor Velaryon.[1][2]

History

Laenor had always favored handsome knights of his household, who he likely took as lovers. The first prominent knight was Ser Joffrey Lonmouth, whom Laenor's third son, Prince Joffrey Velaryon, was later named after. After Ser Joffrey's death, Ser Qarl Correy became Laenor's new favorite.[1][2]

Qarl slew Laenor over a quarrel at a fair at Spicetown. The reasons for the quarrel are not known. Correy was never seen again after escaping.[1] According to The Testimony of Mushroom, Prince Daemon Targaryen paid Correy to kill Laenor to free Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen for himself and offered him escape from Spicetown on a boat but had him murdered and the body disposed of at sea instead.[3][1][2]

Behind the Scenes

Qarl's name may be a reference by George R. R. Martin to Nine Princes in Amber by Roger Zelazny, which features a character called Carl Corey. Other homages by Martin to Zelazny include House Rogers and the Pattern.
