Ser Raymont Baratheon was a knight from House Baratheon and a younger son of Lord Orys Baratheon and Lady Argella Durrandon.[N 1] He was a member of King Aenys I Targaryen's Kingsguard during the Faith Militant uprising.[1]

History

Ser Raymont Baratheon served in the Kingsguard when the Faith Militant rebelled against King Aenys I Targaryen in 41 AC.[1] Three days before King Aenys and his family were to set sail for Dragonstone, two Poor Fellows scaled the walls of the manse atop Visenya's Hill where the royal family resided during the construction of the Red Keep, and broke into the king's bedchamber to assassinate the king.[3] Only the timely intervention of Ser Raymont saved the life of the king.[1]

Notes:
  1. Parentage unproven, but widely accepted as fact by some maesters, as well as members of House Targaryen and House Baratheon itself.
  2. Uncertain, may be Davos Baratheon.
  3. The canon status of the character is unclear. See: Westeros.org: Family trees and successions – Comment by Ran (December 20, 2018).

Behind the Scenes

Raymont Baratheon's canon status is currently unclear. Raymont was created by George R. R. Martin for an early draft of The Sons of the Dragon, and this information was added to The World of Ice & Fire. However, in published editions of The Sons of the Dragon, including the latest edition of Fire & Blood, Raymont is no longer mentioned. Elio "Ran" García, co-author of The World of Ice & Fire, stated that mentions of Raymont would be removed from future editions of The World of Ice & Fire until his canon status is properly defined.[4]

A very similar character, Mychal Baratheon, had a brief mention in the first season of Game of Thrones 3 years before the release of The World of Ice & Fire. Like Raymont, Mychal was a son of Orys Baratheon and a knight of the Kingsguard who prevented an assassination attempt on King Aenys I. It is unknown whether this is merely a coincidence.[5]

Notes

  1. The World of Ice & Fire does not specify which Lord Baratheon is Raymont's father. However, Fire & Blood clarifies that Raymont is a son of Orys, as the sons of the Lord Baratheon that succeeded Orys are all named.
