Ser Raymun Darry is a knight of House Darry[1] and the lord of Castle Darry.[2][N 1]

Character

Raymun and Robert I Baratheon have a wary relationship, since House Darry supported House Targaryen during Robert's Rebellion.[2] Raymun dislikes House Lannister.[3]

History

Ser Raymun's three older brothers all died fighting for the Targaryens in the Battle of the Trident.[2]

Under Raymun, House Darry has secretly kept its loyalty to the Targaryens after Robert's Rebellion.[4]

Recent Events

A Game of Thrones

Arya Stark goes missing after her direwolf, Nymeria, attacks Prince Joffrey Baratheon along the Trident. King Robert I Baratheon's royal party stays at Darry uninvited during the search for the girl. The king appropriates Raymun's audience chamber, sitting in his high seat,[2] as well as his bedchamber.[4] Raymun keeps his emotions guarded when Arya is eventually brought before Robert.[2]

In response to the raising of a House Lannister host at Casterly Rock,[5] Raymun rides to Riverrun with all his strength as Ser Edmure Tully prepares the defenses of the riverlands.[3] Ser Gregor Clegane leads raids across the Red Fork of the Trident.[3] Hoster Tully, Lord Paramount of the Trident, sends Raymun, Ser Marq Piper, and Ser Karyl Vance to King's Landing with the survivors of Sherrer to ask the permission of King Robert to retaliate against the raiders. Eddard Stark, Hand of the King, sends Raymun with Beric Dondarrion, Lord of Blackhaven, to execute Gregor.[3]

Beric's party is ambushed by the Mountain's men, and Raymun is killed in the battle at the Mummer's Ford.[6] He is succeeded by his son, Lyman.[7]

A Clash of Kings

Lyman is killed by Gregor in the sack of Darry.[8]

A Storm of Swords

Harwin tells Arya that Gregor killed Raymun with one blow, cutting off his arm at the elbow and killing his horse.[9] When the brotherhood without banners list the victims of House Lannister to Sandor Clegane, Tom of Sevenstreams mentions Raymun and his son Lyman.[10]

A Feast for Crows

Ser Jaime Lannister recalls that his brother Tyrion had found portraits of all of the kings from House Targaryen in Darry's cellar; Raymun had removed the tapestries for King Robert's visit to the castle.[4] While practicing in the castle's godswood, Jaime recounts to Ser Ilyn Payne that he had slept with his twin, Queen Cersei Lannister, in Raymun's bed after a drunken Robert had passed out on the floor.[4]

Quotes

Varys: You are quite certain these were more than brigands?
Raymun: Brigands, Lord Varys? Oh, they were brigands, beyond a doubt. Lannister brigands.[3]

Varys and Raymun

The lords of the Trident keep the king's peace. The Lannisters have broken it. We ask leave to answer them, steel for steel. We ask justice for the smallfolk of Sherrer and Wendish Town and the Mummer's Ford.[3]

Notes

  1. Raymun has not been formally called Lord of Darry in A Song of Ice and Fire. Eddard Stark thinks of him as Darry's lord in A Game of Thrones, Eddard III, however, and Jaime Lannister does as well in A Feast for Crows, Jaime IV. In A Storm of Swords, Arya VI, Tom of Sevenstreams mentions "Ser Raymun Darry, Lord Darry, young Lord Darry"; it is not confirmed if "Lord Darry" refers to Raymun or possibly his father.
