Ser Regis Groves was a knight of the Kingsguard during the reign of King Aegon III Targaryen.

History

Regis supported the blacks during the Dance of the Dragons. King Aegon III Targaryen appointed him and four other blacks to the Kingsguard in 131 AC after the civil war ended.[1]

Harrenhal had fallen under the sway of an alleged "witch queen", Alys Rivers, after the Battle Above the Gods Eye in 130 AC. Since broken men, outlaws, and robber knights preyed upon the countryside, Ser Tyland Lannister, the Hand of the King, tasked Regis with reclaiming Harrenhal in 132 AC. Regis marched with half a hundred men to Castle Darry, where he was joined by a like number under Ser Damon Darry.[1]

When the king's men arrived at Harrenhal they found the gates barred and six hundred people within, a third of them warriors. Alys claimed the young boy with her was the bastard son of Prince Aemond Targaryen. Alys commanded Regis to kneel and swear his sword to the rightful king, but Regis laughed at her and refused to do so. Some say the sorceress raised a hand and caused Regis's skull to burst, while others state Regis was killed by a crossbowman bolt through his eye. Mushroom, who was not present, claims it was a lead ball from a sling. Alys's riders charged out through Harrenhal's gates and defeated the king's men in a bloody rout, with Damon leading the survivors back to Darry.[1]

Regis's death disturbed Tyland, and Aegon's regents agreed that a larger army should be gathered to reclaim Harrenhal.[1]

Quotes

I do not kneel to bastards, much less the baseborn whelp of a kinslayer and a milk cow.[1]
