When his House rose in rebellion against the Lannisters Ser Reynard joined them. After the Reynes had retreated to their castle of Castamere his brother the Red Lion was in no fit state to lead, so Reynard assumed command in his stead. Reynard knew he did not have the men to defend the castle walls, so he abandoned the surface entirely to the foe and fell back beneath the earth. Once all his folk were safe inside the tunnels, Ser Reynard sent word to Ser Tywin Lannister above, offering terms. But Tywin did not honor Ser Reynard's offer with a reply. Instead he commanded that the mines be sealed. With pick and axe and torch, his own miners brought down tons of stone and soil, burying the great gates to the mines until there was no way in and no way out. Once that was done, he turned his attention to the small, swift stream that fed the crystalline blue pool beside the castle from which Castamere took its name. It took less than a day to dam the stream and only two to divert it to the nearest mine entrance.twoiaf

Ser Reynard Reyne was a knight of House Reyne and the younger son of Lord Robert Reyne.[1]

Appearance and Character

Ser Reynard was charming, cunning, and less headstrong then his older brother, Roger the Red Lion.[1]

History

Reynard and his elder brother, Lord Roger, were often at Casterly Rock once their sister Ellyn married Tion Lannister, the son of Lord Gerold Lannister and heir to the Rock. The brothers returned to Castamere after Tion's death, however, as Gerold began to groom Tytos Lannister for leadership. Ellyn was later rewed to Walderan Tarbeck, Lord of Tarbeck Hall.[1]

Ca. 255 AC, House Tarbeck angered King Aegon V Targaryen through their territorial demands, according to a semi-canon source.[2] Lord Tytos sent Lord Denys Marbrand to capture the Tarbecks, but Roger came to his sister's aid and his soldiers slew the Marbrand men in the night before they reached Tarbeck Hall. Reynard convinced Tytos that Roger thought he was attacking outlaws, however, and the Lord of the Rock pardoned the Tarbecks and Reynes.[2]

After the War of the Ninepenny Kings, Tytos's heir, Ser Tywin Lannister, attempted to bring order to the westerlands. During the ensuing crisis, Reynard oversaw the safe exchange of hostages held by the Lannisters and the Tarbecks at Roger's seat, Castamere.[1]

During the Reyne-Tarbeck rebellion, Tywin extinguished the Tarbecks by killing Lord Walderan Tarbeck in the field and burning Tarbeck Hall. The outnumbered army of House Reyne then attacked Tywin's host, but were forced to flee after the Lannisters withstood the charge. Reynard took command of the Reynes since Roger became feverish after a crossbow wound and was no longer capable of leading.

Reynard abandoned the surface fortifications of Castamere and led the survivors into the mines of the Reynes. According to a semi-canon source,[2] Reynard sent terms to Tywin offering peace if Tytos's other sons were sent into subterranean Castamere as hostages. Tywin disregarded the offer and instead ordered his miners to block Castamere's entrances with stone. The Lannisters then diverted a local stream into an entrance, flooding Castamere and drowning all within.[1]
