Appearance and Character
Rickon is very young, he has bright eyes and favors his mother in appearance.[2] After his mother traveled south Rickon refused to have his hair cut. As a result he has long, unruly hair.[3] His youth makes it difficult for him to cope with the terrible changes that are brought upon his life and family by war, which are reflected in his direwolf companion named Shaggydog.
History
Born at Winterfell in 295 AL, Rickon is the third son and fifth child of Catelyn' and Eddard, head of House Stark; and younger brother to Robb Stark, the King in the North. He is the current heir to Winterfell. Rickon has two older sisters, Sansa and Arya, another older brother Bran and a bastard half-brother, Jon Snow.
Recent Events
A Game of Thrones
Rickon adopts one of the Direwolfs found by the Starks and names it Shaggydog.[4] After his father departs from Winterfell and his mother lingers grief stricken at Bran's bedside, he follows Robb around, crying.[5] When he learns that Robb is leaving too, he becomes very upset and is later found in the crypts, where he attacks two men with Shaggydog and an iron sword taken from one of the tombs. When Robb departs, he refuses to bid farewell.[6] Shortly after Eddard's death in King's Landing, both Bran and Rickon share a vision of their father's spirit in the crypts.[2]
A Clash of Kings
As the turmoil of Eddard's death shakes his family, Rickon becomes largely unsupervised as his eldest brother and mother leave to war, while his sisters are held captive at King's Landing. Alone with his crippled brother, Bran, at Winterfell, Rickon develops an unruly, often violent temper. His fear and rage are reflected in his direwolf, Shaggydog, who turns largely feral and attacks several people before being restrained. Several times, Bran's direwolf, Summer is forced to fight Shaggydog into submission. Rickon becomes friends with Big Walder and Little Walder Frey when they come to live at Winterfell as wards. [7]
Rickon became a hostage of Theon Greyjoy when Theon takes Winterfell and later manages to escape and hide in the crypts bellow the castle with his brother Bran, Hodor, the Reed siblings, and the wildling woman Osha.[8]
After Winterfell is sacked and burned by Ramsay Snow, the group emerges to find Winterfell in ruins and a mortally wounded Maester Luwin, who tells them that Bran and Rickon need to be separated and taken into hiding. Osha agrees to look after Rickon and takes him and Shaggydog to parts unknown.[9]
A Dance with Dragons
Most of Westeros believes him dead, but Wyman Manderly and Robett Glover learn from Wex Pyke, a survivor of the Sack of Winterfell, that Rickon Stark is alive. Wex tells them - via writing since he cannot speak - that Rickon and a woman fled to the island of Skagos.
When Davos Seaworth attempts to convince Lord Manderly to take up Stannis's cause Manderly brings Wex into their meeting and explains to Davos what Wex witnessed. Manderly then tells him that in order to take Stannis as king Davos must meet his terms. Manderly informs Davos,
Roose Bolton has Lord Eddard's daughter. To thwart him White Harbour must have Ned's son ... and the direwolf. The wolf will prove the boy is who we say he is, should the Dreadfort attempt to deny him. That is my price, Lord Davos. Smuggle me back my liege lord, and I will take Stannis Baratheon as my king.
When Davos asks where Rickon is Wex throws his dagger onto a sheepskin map adorning the wall. To Davos's horror it strikes Skagos. Davos is left with no choice but to head to the infamous island to retrieve Rickon Stark. [10]
