Ser Robert Quince was a knight and the castellan of Dragonstone during the Dance of the Dragons.[1]

Appearance and Character

Robert was able, amiable, old and famously obese. He was a steadfast supporter of the queen, Rhaenyra Targaryen.

History

When Rhaenyra Targaryen went forth to seize the Iron Throne and conquer King's Landing, she named Ser Robert Quince as castellan of Dragonstone, passing Ser Alfred Broome over despite the fact that he was the most senior of the knights on the island and expected to be named castellan. Rhaenyra chose Robert because of his more affable character.

When Robert heard the news that the Grey Ghost had been killed by another dragon he was quick to name the Cannibal as the killer. The fisherfolk urged Robert to dispatch knights to the dragon's lair but he refused, reasoning that if they did not trouble the Cannibal he would not trouble them. He then forbade fishing in the waters beneath the Dragonmont's eastern face where the Grey Ghost's body lay rotting.

Although Robert was loyal to the queen and her cause some of the men under him were less than leal and harbored certain resentments and grudges for old wrongs whether real or imagined. Prominent amongst them was Alfred. Prior to, and during, the fall of Dragonstone to King Aegon II Targaryen, Alfred proved more than willing to betray his queen. He led the men who burst into Robert's chambers and slew him, driving a spear into his huge pale belly. The thrust was delivered with such force that the spear went out Robert's back, through the feather-bed and straw mattress, and into the floor beneath.

Rhaenyra eventually fled back to Dragonstone. When she came ashore Rhaenyra was met by Ser Alfred Broome. She asked why Robert had not come himself to meet her, to which Alfred replied that the queen would be seeing "our fat friend" at the castle.

Rhaenyra and her party were taken by escort to Robert's charred corpse, which was burned beyond all recognition, and hanging from the battlements of the gatehouse beside Dragonstone's steward, master-at-arms, and captain of guards. Only by the enormous seize of the corpse did did they recognize that it was Robert's.[1]
