Roose Bolton is the current Lord of the Dreadfort. Though mild-mannered, he is cold, calculating, and capable of great cruelty. He speaks softly, never raising his voice, forcing those who must listen to do so intently.[1] He receives regular leechings, which he believes to improve his health, prompting some to call him the "Leech Lord".

Appearance
He is of average size and appearance, with his only noticeable feature being his eerie, pale eyes. His skin is pasty white, most likely due to the leechings.[2]
History
Lord Roose fought at the Battle of the Trident during Robert's Rebellion. When Ser Barristan Selmy, seriously wounded, was brought before Robert Baratheon, he counseled that they should kill him. Robert ignored Roose and spared his life, sending his own maester to tend to his wounds.[3]
Recent Events
A Game of Thrones
Bolton answered his liege's call when Robb Stark summoned his banners to aid his grandfather Hoster Tully and father. His patience, cold cunning, and strategic skill proved invaluable, earning him the command of the Northern foot sent to engage Tywin Lannister. During the war he married his second wife, Walda Frey, granddaughter of Lord Walder Frey, who had allied his house to Robb's. His calculating nature aided him in his command as he maximized the damages done to his northern rivals yet kept his own men relatively unscathed.
A Clash of Kings
Roose took Harrenhal after the Brave Companions revolted against the Lannister garrison and opened its gates to Bolton's men. While at Harrenhal, Roose took Arya Stark as his cupbearer, mistaking her for a commoner. Relations between Vargo Hoat and Roose became strained as Vargo suspected that Roose would seek an alliance with the Lannisters.
A Storm of Swords
After the Brave Companions took Jaime Lannister hostage, Vargo had Jaime's sword-hand cut off to drive a wedge between Roose and Tywin. The ploy did not work. Roose received Jaime's assurance that Roose would not be held responsible for Jaime's injury. Before leaving, Jaime told Roose to give his regards to Robb Stark.
Robb summoned Roose to aid in retaking the North from House Greyjoy. However, after Tywin's great victory on the Blackwater, Bolton decided that House Stark's cause was lost and plotted with Tywin, Walder Frey, and his own bastard son Ramsay to bring them down.
During the wedding Roose mumbled an excuse to get out of the hall. The bedding and playing of "The Rains of Castamere" was the signal for the Freys to attack their guests. Roose got back into the hall dressed in mail armor. Robb had already been wounded by arrows. Roose approached him and killed him while saying:
- Jaime Lannister sends his regards[4]
Outside the castle the Frey and Bolton soldiers attacked the Northern - Riverland forces and annihilated them. For this service, Tywin gave him the title of Warden of the North. This raised House Bolton's status to Lords Paramount of the North and one of the ruling families of Westeros. Roose also received a royal decree of legitimization for his bastard son and heir Ramsay.
A Feast for Crows
Lord Roose marches north with his own forces from the North, augmented by two thousand Freys under the command of Ser Aenys and Ser Hosteen Frey.[5]
A Dance with Dragons
After Moat Cailin surrendered to Ramsay, Roose met his son and introduced him to his bride to be "Arya Stark" (actually Jeyne Poole). Roose is greaty displeased by his sons actions stating as much to Theon Greyjoy saying Ramsay is too open where Roose was quiet. At the wedding feast Roose does not eat any of the food or drink served to him unless he see's Wyman Manderly who brought the food eat of the same dish.
At the wedding feast Lady Barbrey Dustin describes Roose thus to Theon Greyjoy
"...some men hunt, some hawk, some tumble dice. Roose plays with men. You and me, these Freys, Lord Manderly, his plump new wife, even his bastard, we are but his playthings"
Roose, Ramsay and his army remained at Winterfell waiting the attack of Stannis Baratheons host. Several Boltan men were murdered during the wait and suspicion was cast on several of the present Stark Bannerman but in actual fact it was Mance Ryder and several wildling spearwifes who were on a mission to free Arya Stark.
