Runes are the characters that the First Men used to write the Old Tongue. They were engraved on stones and other objects but were not written in books or scrolls. They are thought to be magical.

Usage

House Royce owns several sets of ancient bronze plate armor inscribed with runes that are thought to make their wearers immune to injury.[1] Their sigil and that of their cadet branch, House Royce of the Gates of the Moon, bear runes.[2]

Runes translated by Maester Barneby lend credence to the tradition of House Blackwood that states the family ruled most of the wolfswood until they were driven to exile by the Kings of Winter of House Stark.[3]

The crown of the Kings in the North was an open circlet of hammered bronze incised with runes of the First Men, surmounted by nine black iron spikes in the shape of longswords.[4][4]
