The Battle of Gulltown was the first battle fought during Robert's Rebellion, or the War of the Usurper, in 282 AC.

Prelude

After King Aerys II Targaryen executed Lord Rickard Stark and his heir, Brandon Stark, in King's Landing, he sent word to Lord Jon Arryn at the Eyrie to hand over his ward, Eddard Stark, the new Lord of Winterfell. Instead, Jon sent back only defiance. Ned Stark left the Eyrie to gather his bannermen from the North, while Lord Arryn began to call his own vassals from the Vale of Arryn in rebellion to the Iron Throne. The city of Gulltown remained loyal to the Targaryen dynasty, however, and rather than sailing from there Ned returned to the North via the Mountains of the Moon, the Fingers, and Sisterton.[1]

Battle

While Ned was making his way north, Lord Arryn led the rebel bannermen from the Vale against Gulltown, which was defended by House Grafton. Lord Robert Baratheon, Jon's other ward and a close friend of Ned, was the first of the rebels to gain the walls of Gulltown. Robert slew Marq Grafton with his own hand.[1]

Aftermath

The capture of Gulltown by Jon Arryn allowed the Defender of the Vale to consolidate rebel control in the Vale of Arryn. Lyn Corbray won his knighthood fighting alongside the Graftons at the gates of Gulltown, but he joined Lord Arryn after the battle.[2] Lord Robert Baratheon returned to the Stormlands to raise his own bannermen, which led to the Battle of Summerhall.[3] Ned Stark survived the journey across the Bite and raised his northern bannermen.

Quotes

This Baratheon is fearless. He fights the way a king should fight.[1]
