A Dance with Dragons

Upon meeting Tyrion Lannister in Essos, Haldon Halfmaester tries to get the measure of him by asking him how Serwyn of the Mirror Shield slew the dragon Urrax.

Tyrion tells him by approaching the dragon behind his shield. Urrax saw only his reflection until Serwyn plunged his spear through his eye. Haldon is unimpressed saying that even Duck knows that tale.

Haldon then asks Tyrion if he can tell him the name of the knight who tried the same ploy with the dragon Vhagar during the Dance of the Dragons.

Tyrion answers that it was Ser Byron Swann, who was roasted for his trouble, only the dragon was Syrax, not Vhagar. Haldon tells him he is mistaken and that in The Dance of the Dragons, A True Telling Maester Munkun wrote – Tyrion immediately interrupts him, by saying that Grand Maester Munkun errs, the dragon was in fact Vhagar. [1]

Tyrion explains that Ser Byron’s squire saw his master die and wrote to his daughter of the manner of his death.

The squire’s account says that the dragon was Syrax, Rhaenyra’s she-dragon, which makes much more sense than Munkun’s version as Swann was the son of a marcher lord, and Storm's End was for Aegon. Vhagar was ridden by Prince Aemond, Aegon’s brother. He asks Haldon, why would Swann want to slay her? Haldon doesn’t reply, instead he purses his lips and tells Tyrion to try not to tumble off his horse during their journey.
