Tormund, better known as Tormund Giantsbane or Tormund Thunderfist, self-styled Tall-talker, Horn-blower and Breaker of Ice, Husband to Bears, the Mead-king of Ruddy Hall, Speaker to Gods and Father of Hosts.[1] He is a famous wildling raider. He has four sons, Toregg, Torwynd, Dryn and Dormund and one daughter, Munda.[2]

Appearance

He is a broad man with a white beard. He wears golden bands engraved with runes on his arms.[3] He has a broad face.[4]

Recent Events

A Storm of Swords

Tormund was among those gathered in Mance Rayder's tent when Jon Snow was presented to him.[5] He shows Jon the giants. Jon is then attached to Tormund's war party, with Ygritte and Longspear Ryk joining Tormund's party too.

When Jon Snow goes to treat with Mance for the Night's Watch after the first attack on Castle Black Tormund is the first to greet him. He brings Jon to Mance's tent. He defended Jon's right to speak to Mance. When Stannis Baratheon attacked the wildlings Tormund led a triple line of spearmen. They were attacked on the flank by Stannis's knights and broke. After the battle he was regathering the dispersed wildlings.

A Feast for Crows

With Mance Rayder captured, Tormund becomes the new leader of the remnants of the wildling army.

A Dance with Dragons

Jon sends Val to retrieve Tormund and bring an offer of peace to him.[6] Tormund agrees to the terms and goes to the Wall. The wildlings do not like the terms offered by the Night's Watch, but with the attacks of the Others constantly decimating their numbers and their people's suffering only increasing, they consent to the terms.[7]

Tormund has the wildlings hand over all their wealth or anything of value to the Watch, along with a son as a hostage from all the wildling chiefs. Tormund calls this Jon's "blood price". Tormund is the first wildling to hand over his wealth, giving over his gold wristbands. Jon states he may keep them if he wishes but Tormund refuses because he will not let it be said he made the rest of his people give up their wealth while he kept his.

The peace means the wildling warriors will garrison the abandoned castles along the Wall to help the Watch defend the realm from the Others, while the non-martial Free Folk will be settled on the Gift and the New Gift. Jon Snow re-garrisons Oakenshield as Tormund's seat.

Jon asks Tormund to a march with him to rescue Cotter Pyke and the stranded people at Hardhome. However, the planned rescue mission is stopped when Jon receives a letter from Ramsay Bolton. Tormund, hearing the letter's contents, agrees to march with Jon south when he learns of Mance Rayder's captivity by House Bolton. He also intends to persuade the other wildlings in joining the march as well.
