Ser Tyland Lannister was a knight from House Lannister. The master of ships and a member of the small council during the reign of Viserys I Targaryen, he was named master of coin at the start of the Dance of the Dragons. He was the younger twin brother of the Lord of Casterly Rock, Jason Lannister.[3][4]

History

Early life

In 112 AC, Ser Tyland and his older twin, Ser Jason, vied for the hand of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen without success.[4] An unknown amount of time later,[5] Tyland was named master of ships by King Viserys I Targaryen.[6]

The Dance of the Dragons

As the body of the recently deceased Viserys I Targaryen was growing cold Tyland was amongst the members of the small council that gathered in the queen's chambers. There, talk turned to the question of succession and the discussion lasted till dawn. During the meeting Tyland pointed out that many of the lords who had sworn to defend the succession of Princess Rhaenyra were long dead. He remarked that it had been twenty-four years, and that he himself swore no such oath and was a child at the time.[3]

At the start of the Dance of the Dragons Ser Tyland was named master of coin by Dowager Queen Alicent Hightower. Upon his appointment, Tyland acted at once to seize the royal treasury. The crown's gold was divided into four parts. One part was entrusted to the care of the Iron Bank of Braavos for safekeeping, another sent to Casterly Rock and a third to Oldtown. The remaining wealth was used by the greens for bribes and gifts and hiring sellswords.[3]

When Prince Aemond Targaryen was acting as Prince Regent and Protector of the Realm he summoned the bannermen and council and announced his intention to bring the battle to his uncle, Prince Daemon, and chastise the rebellious river lords. Although not all members of the green council favored this move Ser Tyland supported him.

When Rhaenyra took King's Landing in 130 AC Dowager Queen Alicent quickly realized that resistance was futile and emerged from Maegor's Holdfast with her father, Ser Otto Hightower, Lord Jasper Wylde and Ser Tyland.

While at the Red Keep Queen Rhaenyra set about rewarding her friends and inflicting savage punishments on those who had served her half-brother. Ser Tyland was given to the torturers in the hope of recovering some of the crown's treasure that he had divided and sent to different destinations.[3] Tyland refused to tell, despite being blinded, gelded, and mutilated by the torturers.[6]

After Rhaenyra fled the capital, Ser Tyland was released by the gutter knights of Ser Perkin the Flea, who had seized the Red Keep to install his squire, Trystane Truefyre, on the Iron Throne.[7]

After the city was taken back by the greens, Tyland was kept as master of coin, and was sent to the Free Cities to hire sellswords to fight for Aegon II.

Later life

After the Dance ended with King Aegon III Targaryen's ascendance to the Iron Throne, a new small council was set up during the regency with members from both sides of the war. Tyland was made Hand of the King for the young Aegon III. Tyland had been so disfigured by his ordeal that It was said that ladies new at court fainted at the sight of him, to hide his disfigurement from others, Tyland took to wearing a silken hood. He was expected to be a weak Hand, but he defied expectations. Tyland abolished the taxes made by Rhaenyra Targaryen and Lord Bartimus Celtigar, and used the gold he had secured during the dance to give out loans to lords so they could rebuild, he also had the gates of King's Landing strengthened so they could better resist attacks from within the city walls. He died of Winter Fever in 133 AC, King Aegon held his hand as Tyland passed away.[2][8]
