Ursula Upcliff was a member of House Upcliff of Witch Isle. A reputed sorceress who lived during the coming of the Andals to Westeros, Ursula called herself bride of the Merling King.[1]
History
Ursula Upcliff joined the alliance of First Men houses, petty kings, and clans summoned by Robar II Royce, High King of the Vale, the Fingers, and the Mountains of the Moon, to fight against the Andals. According to tradition, Robar won her alliance due to his "honeyed tongue."[1]
Ursula rode a bloodred horse in the Battle of the Seven Stars, during which she tried to curse Torgold Tollett. However, according to singers, Torgold leapt upon Ursula's horse, grasped her face, and tore her head from her shoulders as she screamed for succor.[1]
Behind the Scenes
Ursula Upcliff may be a nod by George R. R. Martin to the sea witch Ursula in Disney's The Little Mermaid. She also might reference author Ursula K. Le Guin, whom Martin greatly admired.[2]
