History
In 120 AC, known as the Year of the Red Spring, both of Lord Corlys Velaryon's children died: his daughter Laena and her younger brother Laenor. Both of them had surviving children: Laena's twin daughters with Daemon Targaryen, and Laenor's three sons with Rhaenyra Targaryen. Scandalously, half a year later Daemon and Rhaenyra remarried to each other, and there were rumors that Rhaenyra's eldest three sons were actually bastards fathered by Harwin Strong (due to their appearance, possessing brown hair unlike either Rhaenyra or Laenor). It was presumed that Rhaenyra's eldest son Jacaerys Velaryon would one day succeed to the Iron Throne upon the death of Rhaenyra's father Viserys I Targaryen, thus Rhaenyra and Laenor's second son Lucerys Velaryon was treated as the heir to House Velaryon and Driftmark.
In the year 126 AC, however, Lord Corlys Velaryon was struck by a sudden fever and fell gravely ill: though he soon made a full recovery, this brought the question of succession to a head. Lord Corlys had half a dozen nephews, led by Vaemond as the eldest of them, who openly claimed that Laenor's three sons with Rhaenyra were truly bastards - and thus Vaemond should be Corlys's chosen successor.[N 1]
In response Luke's mother, Rhaenyra, had dispatched her husband, Prince Daemon, to seize Ser Vaemond. She had his head removed, and fed his carcass to her dragon, Syrax. His five younger cousins had their tongues removed afterwards by King Viserys I Targaryen for similar reasons.[1][3]

Notes
- ↑ Vaemond's claim that he should be heir if all three of Laenor's sons were bastards was audacious, because even if it were true, Laenor's older sister Laena herself had two surviving daughters, Baela and Rhaena. According to traditional inheritance law of male-preference primogeniture followed in Westeros, a lord's daughter should inherit before his younger brother (or his younger brother's son). Moreover, this was specifically the point of contention by which Corlys's wife Rhaenys Targaryen tried to claim the Iron Throne: that as the daughter of King Jaehaerys's first son Aemon, she ranked ahead of Jaehaerys's second son Baelon - or Baelon's son Viserys. Thus even if Corlys and Rhaenys became convinced of the accusations of bastardy, they would probably be the last people to disinherit their daughter Laena's twin girls in favor of Corlys's nephew Vaemond - which would in effect have repeated how Rhaenys was passed over.
