White ravens are ravens that are white. They are not albino ravens, but a separate species. This is known because their eyes are black. They are more clever than their black cousins and larger.[1] According to Alleras White ravens and Black ravens are kept in separate rookeries in the Citadel otherwise they fight each other.[2]

Uses

White ravens are used by the Citadel to send only the most important messages to other maesters throughout Westeros. They are commonly sent when the seasons change.[3]

A Clash of Kings

A White Raven arrives at Dragonstone from the Citadel with a message declaring the end of this 10-year-long summer (10 years, two turns and 16 days, the longest in living memory).[4]

A White Raven arrives at Winterfell, which brought word of autumn.[5]

A Dance with Dragons

At the end of A Dance with Dragons, a messenger then announces that Grand Maester Pycelle is asking for Kevan Lannister's presence. Kevan arrives at the Maester's chambers and enters to find a White raven sitting on the window ledge...a sign from the Citadel that winter has come. He sees Pycelle is dead at his table, and then is hit by a crossbow bolt. He now sees Varys, who tells Kevan that he had to die because has been too successful as Hand of the King at uniting the realm.[6]
