Will is a ranger of the Night's Watch in the prologue of A Game of Thrones. From Will's point of view, the prologue describes his search for a band of wildling rangers until he was killed by the Others.

Past and Skills

Will had been a poacher before joining the Night's Watch, hunting in the Mallister's woods. Mallister's freeriders caught him skinning a buck and gave him the choice of taking the black or losing a hand. He chose the former. When A Game of Thrones started, he had already been on the Wall for four years.

From hunting, Will learned to move silently through the woods. Later his skills also proved useful as a ranger of the Night's Watch, because he could approach his enemies undetected.

Death

In the prologue chapter, Will was under the command of Ser Waymar Royce, along with Gared, in the haunted forest beyond the Wall. He had found the dead bodies of eight wildlings in their camp and was taking his commander to further examine the bodies. Will and Gared were nervous and wanted to go back to Wall because they felt that something was watching them and it had grown very cold. But Ser Waymar Royce insisted to see the bodies and Will took him to the camp, leaving Gared behind to guard their horses. When they got there, the bodies were gone. Ser Waymar Royce concluded the men had not been dead and ordered Will to climb a tree and look for a fire. While Will was up the tree, the Others arrived and killed Ser Waymar Royce. Will climbed down after he had made sure the Others had gone away and Ser Waymar Royce, turned into a wight, strangled him.
